Let's say I'd love to push my skills further, does anyone have a clue on how to "acquire" a personal mentor? Or create a small group of artists who can mentor each other out..? Does anyone have any tips and tools to share, that helped them take their skills to the next steps?

At the moment I read ArtOrder and listen to Ninja Mountain podcast a lot, but I wouldn't know where to post my art to get good feedback, and I'd love to have buddies with whom I could do some hardcore art talk. And get crits.

This is somewhat vague, but any thoughts and opinions are welcome. :)

  • Reading: Drawing on the artist within

Sorry if I'm posting on an ooold journal entry (oh the consequences of lurking -_-;; ) , but what you could do is find like-minded people and set up a blog together, where you guys post stuff up and critique the pieces by commenting on it. It's better than posting on forums and getting tons of asspats (Conceptart.org has been rather asspatty these days, not to mention they're quite a b*tch to navigate through), and plus its nice, cozy and private, and you really get to know your fellow bloggers. The only downside is if the said contributors don't update frequently. I've been part of a critique blog that went okay for a while .... and then it became rather dead because alot of the people stopped posting/post very very infrequently.

It's ok, the entry is not that old and the topic is still up to date. :)

I initiated a blog like what you're talking about in your comment, but sadly no one has time or arts to share on it. There has been one post (by me), and one comment. I do understand being busy (for I am) but.... yeah IDK. It's kind of hard I guess to find motivated people who have the time to commit to a feedback blog. Having a regular full-time day job and chores to take care of seriously doesn't help. I think I'd have to find other people to join it, but I don't really know that many artists... :/ I'm also afraid of Drama.

I completely agree with you about Conceptart.org. All I can do over there is lurk and be awed when I find something particularly awesome. And, like you said, no fun to navigate at all. Threads have a zillion pages of asspats. I don't really want to post on that forum because for one thing it's a bit intimidating, and for another thing I kind of know what I'll be told and expect it to be of not much help. "You need to go do some more life drawing" "Paint from life" Both things I don't really enjoy and even if I understand how helpful they'd be I'm not in a situation right now where I can easily attend that kind of event. Either that or I'd get no feedback and be swallowed in the constant stream of new threads.

That's why I love the concept of a mentor; it's someone who knows you well enough to be really helpful and push and shove you in the right directions. Harder to find than a decent job, sadly. I wouldn't want a mentor that'd take me by the hand and lead me gently through it. It's more like I feel I need help reorienting myself artwise and the more I try to find an answer on my own, the more lost I feel.

Long reply is getting long... But anyway, thank you for taking the time to leave a comment to my journal. :)

You know you're always welcome to chat with me or send me anything. I may 'seem' like I've been a bit absent from the interwebs, but I've really been honing my skills and rebuilding a few things!

You know I love to chat with you and get your opinion and invaluable feedback on my drawings, it's just that I've been absent for like 3 weeks. Moving and all, still haven't gotten the time to unpack my computer and get settled to draw stuff. I can't wait though, I'm really itching to draw a lot of things. I will definitely send things your way as soon as I can and again, thank you so much for your input, it helps me a lot every time. :D

I'd like to know that too, especially the mentoring part =( Getting asspats is nice but insightful critique is better in my book.

It is better in my book too... I saw that ConceptArt.org's forums has a section about mentoring but it's mostly people looking for a mentor, not mentors offering their invaluable advice. The Monkeyslunch Forums were very good but are sadly silent these days. It's not that easy to befriend or get to know someone with the level of skill and mindset appropriate for mentoring to, er, mentor one, I guess.

Wish these came in the Cracker Jack bags. ;)
